Sunday – Cairns

April 13, 2006 at 3:58 am (Australia)

Sunday was Sue’s last day, so she arranged a morning of horse-riding in the Daintree rainforest, and on the nearby beach, for herself and Ann. I didn’t fancy that, & they wouldn’t take children as young as Sam. Instead, we went for an ice-cream at the Internet café and did some food shopping.

We also hired a car, and did the hour-long drive to take Sue back to the airport at Cairns. It was still a picturesque journey, but I was still getting used to driving on Australian roads, and using an automatic car. It was hard to take much notice of the view. At least they drive on the right side of the road (i.e. the left-hand side), but they’re better at sticking to the speed-limit.

The remaining 3 of us then carried on into Cairns to find the centre and harbour. Definitely a bigger city, and more touristy near the marina and ”lagoon” (there is no beach in Cairns, so they built a fake one as part of a lagoon close to the sea-front). It was Ok for a quick visit, but on the whole, I’m glad we went for an apartment in Port Douglas instead. Much better for a relaxed holiday. It’s also better located for most of the tours.

We decided to get tea for Sam in Cairns, which was probably a mistake. The regular 6 o’clock shower was a serious downpour and hit town just as we set off. I could barely see the road – which isn’t good when it’s more like a roller-coaster with sheer drops!

Sam is missing using the swimming pool… have to remember to leave time to do that soon…
